L&T Energy GreenTech Ltd (LTEG), a wholly owned subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro (L&T), is set to establish India’s largest green hydrogen plant at Indian Oil Corporation Ltd’s (IOCL) Panipat Refinery in Haryana. Developed on a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model, the facility will supply 10,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually to IOCL for the next 25 years, supporting the Government of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission.
Designed to operate round-the-clock on renewable energy, the plant aligns with IOCL’s decarbonisation strategy and contributes to India’s broader net-zero goals. Green hydrogen will be produced using high-pressure alkaline electrolysers manufactured at L&T Electrolysers Ltd’s advanced facility in Hazira, Gujarat.
This project marks a major milestone in India’s clean energy journey, reinforcing L&T’s leadership in developing scalable, sustainable infrastructure. By spearheading this initiative, LTEG positions itself as a pioneer in India’s emerging green hydrogen ecosystem, paving the way for large-scale adoption across hard-to-abate sectors such as refineries and fertiliser industries.
Mr. Subramaniam Sarma, Deputy Managing Director & President, L&T, said:
“Establishing India’s first major green hydrogen plant validates our vision to lead the country’s energy transition. This long-term partnership with IOCL not only strengthens our relationship but also demonstrates our ability to execute impactful clean energy projects at scale.”
Mr. Derek Shah, Head – Green Manufacturing & Development at L&T, added:
“This project showcases our comprehensive green energy capabilities — from manufacturing electrolysers to full-scale execution and operations. Powered by advanced technology and skilled expertise, we aim to deliver a world-class, zero-emission facility that sets new industry standards. By using indigenously built electrolysers, this initiative also supports the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ mission and India’s long-term decarbonisation agenda.”
