Pre-Session: Sensex, Nifty set for a weak start amid mixed global cues

Indian benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, are expected to open on a weak note on July 25, taking cues from GIFT Nifty, which was trading around 24,982 earlier this morning.

Market sentiment on the final trading day of the week may be influenced by Q1 earnings, India’s forex data for the week ended July 18, developments in the India-UK trade deal, mixed global signals, institutional investment flows, and activity in the primary market.

On July 24, both Sensex and Nifty declined over 0.6 percent, erasing the previous session’s gains as broad-based selling weighed on sentiment. However, selective buying in pharma and PSU banking stocks helped cap the losses.

The 30-share benchmark index ended at 82184.17 down by -542.47 points or by -0.66 % and then NSE Nifty was at 25062.1 down by -157.8 points or by -0.63 %.

On the global front, Asia-Pacific markets traded mostly lower on Thursday as investors assessed recent trade developments and global macro signals. Nikkei slipped 0.55 per cent, while the broader Topix index declined 0.73 per cent. ASX 200 fell 0.51 per cent. Meanwhile, Kospi was flat.

On Wall Street, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite extended their record-setting rally. The S&P 500 edged up 0.07 per cent to a fresh closing high of 6,363.35, and the Nasdaq gained 0.18 per cent to end at 21,057.96. However, the Dow Jones Industrial Average underperformed, falling 316.38 points, or 0.7 per cent, to close at 44,693.91.
