On the other hand, auto companies have been under pressure from rising input costs and already commercial vehicles have started hiking prices.

However, earlier, it was said that its not just small cars, but the rising affluence in India is also making the super luxury market worth the fight for Mercedes Benz, BMW and Audi.

India is fast emerging as a battleground for the Rs 20 lakh-plus German luxury carmakers, who smell huge demand here, with rise in the number of millionaires and billionaires.

Meanwhile, in the battle for numbers, BMW has overtaken Mercedes in 2009, ending its near-decade regime at the top.

BMW, after started assembling cars in India around 2007, sold 3,619 units in 2009, registering around 25% growth. Mercedes, which has been assembling cars in India for over 15 years, has not been able to keep pace as it saw demand slipping a little over 10% in 2009 with sales at 3,247 units, against 3,625 units in the previous year.

On the other hand, BMW's luxury models- Gran Turismo(Suv), X6M(sports coupe) and super luxury sedan 760Li- adored the Auto Show.

Gran Turismo comes as a limited version @Rs63lakhs; X6M costs Rs1.29 crore and the 5th generation BMW 7 series 760Li costs Rs1.3 crore.

BMW had a good stint in 2009 by leading the luxury segment. India happened to be the most successful market for BMW, said its President for India.
