The rupee weakened by 3 paise to 88.78 against the US dollar in early trade on Thursday, moving in a narrow range as investors monitored US fiscal developments, trade tariff issues, and FPI trends for direction.
At the interbank foreign exchange market, the domestic currency opened at 88.76 and later slipped to 88.78 per dollar, down 3 paise from its previous close.
However, positive momentum in domestic equities helped limit further losses.
