Reinforcing the vision of Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, India has significantly reduced its dependence on fertilizer imports, with domestic production meeting nearly 73 per cent of the country’s total fertilizer requirement in 2025. The milestone marks a major step towards self-reliance while ensuring uninterrupted and timely availability of fertilizers for farmers across the country.
With fertilizer security as a priority, the Government has focused on long-term supply arrangements for critical raw materials and adopted a strategy of strategic diversification to mitigate global uncertainties and supply-chain disruptions.
These sustained efforts have resulted in a steady rise in domestic fertilizer production over the past five years. Total production increased from 433.29 lakh tonnes in 2021 to 467.87 lakh tonnes in 2022, followed by a sharp rise to 507.93 lakh tonnes in 2023. Output remained strong at 509.57 lakh tonnes in 2024 and reached an all-time high of 524.62 lakh tonnes in 2025.
The growth has been driven by the commissioning of new fertilizer plants, revival of previously closed units, promotion of indigenous manufacturing, and assured availability of raw materials. Together, these measures have enhanced the resilience, capacity, and sustainability of India’s fertilizer sector.
The Government reaffirmed its commitment to further strengthening fertilizer security, supporting farmers with timely and affordable inputs, and ensuring sustainable agricultural growth in line with the goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
