Rajesh Power Services Ltd arm signs BESPA with Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd for 65 MW Battery Storage Project

Rajesh Power Projects Pvt Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Rajesh Power Services Limited (RPSL), has signed a Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA) with state-run Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) to develop a 65 MW / 130 MWh standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project at Virpore, Gujarat. The agreement establishes a long-term framework for developing and operating the battery storage facility and marks the company’s formal entry into the utility-scale energy storage segment.

Under the BESPA, the project will operate under a 12-year agreement from the date of commissioning at a contracted tariff of ?1.89 lakh per MW per month. The facility will comprise a 65 MW battery system with a storage capacity of 130 MWh, capable of supplying electricity for up to two hours. The project is expected to be commissioned within 18 months from the date of signing the agreement.

The project was awarded earlier this year through tariff-based competitive bidding under GUVNL’s ‘Request for Selection for setting up of Standalone BESS – Phase VII’. It is supported by Viability Gap Funding through the Power System Development Fund, aimed at promoting advanced energy storage infrastructure.

Standalone battery storage systems are increasingly being adopted by utilities to support renewable energy integration and enhance grid flexibility. These systems store electricity during surplus generation periods and supply it during peak demand, helping manage intermittency, strengthen grid stability, and optimise power procurement. Gujarat has emerged as a leading state in deploying grid-scale battery storage, with GUVNL initiating multiple procurement phases to complement the state’s expanding renewable energy capacity.

Commenting on the development, Kurang Panchal, Managing Director of Rajesh Power Services Limited, said the BESPA signing marks a significant milestone as the company enters the utility-scale battery storage segment. He added that battery energy storage systems will play a crucial role in ensuring grid flexibility and reliability as renewable capacity grows, and the project reflects the company’s commitment to supporting India’s evolving power infrastructure through strong execution and long-term operational capabilities.
