Pre-Session: GIFT Nifty signals lower start for Indian markets; China, Japan decline

Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty 50 are likely to open on a negative note on December 13, tracking cues from GIFT Nifty trading around 24,557, a short while ago this morning.



However, the lower November month retail inflation print, and higher index of industrial production reading for October may provide some support to the markets.



The Indian benchmark indices ended lower on December 12 with Nifty around 24,550 amid selling across the sectors and ahead of retail inflation data outcome later today, and Friday’s WPI inflation data.



On Thursday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 81289.96 down by -236.18 points or by -0.29 % and then NSE Nifty was at 24548.7 down by -93.1 points or by -0.38 %.

On the global front, Markets in the Asia-Pacific region were lower, with Chinese stocks leading losses.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index fell 1.39 per cent, while mainland China’s CSI 300 was down 0.94 per cent. The Shanghai Composite was lower by 1.11 per cent.

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 fell 1.16 per cent, while the broad-based Topix saw a smaller loss of 1.12 per cent.

South Korea’s Kospi was 0.1 per cent down, but the small-cap Kosdaq was 0.8 per cent above the flatline. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.69 per cent.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 234.44 points, or 0.53 per cent, to 43,914.12, the S&P 500 lost 32.94 points, or 0.54 per cent, to 6,051.25 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 132.05 points, or 0.66 per cent, to 19,902.84.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 233257 with a total turnover of Rs. 15943.16 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 1304819 with a total turnover of Rs. 87325.55 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 551101100 with a total turnover of Rs. 34281117.36 Crore. and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 7624830 with a total turnover of Rs. 526879.95 Crore.



The FIIs on 12/12/2024 stood as net buyer in equity and debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 12569.00 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 1879.94 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 12374.25 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 429.35 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. 194.75 Crore and Rs. 1450.59
