Indian benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, are likely to open on a negative note today, tracking weak cues from GIFT Nifty, which was trading around 24,555 in early trade.
Sentiment remains subdued following the announcement by US President Donald Trump of an additional 25% tariff on Indian exports to the US, citing India's continued import of Russian crude oil. This move raises the total tariff burden on Indian goods to 50%, significantly affecting the country’s export competitiveness compared to other global players, including China. In response, India has strongly criticized the decision, calling it "unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable."
On August 6, markets ended lower for the second straight session amid volatility, after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) kept key interest rates unchanged and maintained a ‘neutral’ policy stance, in line with expectations.
On Wednesday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 80543.99 down by -166.26 points or by -0.21 % and then NSE Nifty was at 24574.2 down by -75.35 points or by -0.31 %.
On the global front, Markets in the Asia-Pacific region traded mixed after Trump vowed to impose a 100 per cent tariff on semiconductor and chip imports, though companies manufacturing within the US would be exempt. Japan’s Nikkei 225 and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 were flat, while South Korea’s Kospi index dropped by 0.12 per cent.
Overnight in the US, Wall Street’s major indices closed higher, boosted by strong corporate earnings, with US yields also rising. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite surged by 1.21 per cent, the broader S&P 500 added 0.73 per cent, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.18 per cent.
