Post-Session: Sensex plunges 706 points as steep 50% US tariffs dent investors' sentiment

Stock market benchmark indices slumped on Thursday, with the Sensex plunging 706 points, after the US implemented an additional 25 per cent tariff on India’s purchase of Russian oil, announced by President Donald Trump.



Investor sentiment was further weighed down by continued foreign fund outflows.



The fresh levy, which took effect on Wednesday, raises the total US tariff burden on India to 50 per cent.



The 30-share benchmark index ended at 80080.57 down by -705.97 points or by -0.87 % and then NSE Nifty was at 24500.9 down by -211.15 points or by -0.85 %.



Sensex touched intraday high of 80775.71 and intraday low of 80013.02 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 24702.65 and intraday low of 24481.6



The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Titan Company Ltd. (Rs. 3636.90,+1.22%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 3565.00,+0.72%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 14800.65,+0.61%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1055.00,+0.46%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1387.65,+0.17%), among others.



The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were HCL Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 1449.75,-2.85%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 1500.05,-1.95%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 274.40,-1.93%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 3096.65,-1.89%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 958.00,-1.55%), among others.



CDS index was at 60432.37 up by 361.92 points or by 0.6%. Kalyan Jewellers India Ltd. (Rs. 509.80,+2.36%), Whirlpool of India Ltd. (Rs. 1306.00,+1.68%), Titan Company Ltd. (Rs. 3636.90,+1.22%), Voltas Ltd. (Rs. 1358.95,+0.88%), Blue Star Ltd. (Rs. 1878.10,+0.71%),.



IT index was at 34764.96 down by -592.46 points or by -1.68%. Mastek Ltd. (Rs. 2422.80,-4.10%), R Systems International Ltd. (Rs. 448.40,-3.67%), Vakrangee Ltd. (Rs. 8.36,-3.35%), Zensar Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 777.65,-3.29%), HCL Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 1449.75,-2.85%),.



The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 4438 , shares advanced were 1564 while 2698 shares declined and 176 were unchanged.
