Sensex surges 200 pts; Nifty holds 25,100

Indian equities opened higher on Tuesday as investors awaited the US Federal Reserve’s policy decision due Wednesday (Sept 17). Domestically, markets are also watching today’s meeting between India and US chief negotiators for updates on the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA).



At 9:40 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 82015.37 up by 229.63 points or by 0.28 % and then NSE Nifty was at 25112.2 up by 43 points or by 0.17 %.



Sensex touched intraday high of 82038.6 and intraday low of 81779.94 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 25122 and intraday low of 25070.45



The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1118.80,+1.31%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 3573.50,+1.25%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 335.20,+1.19%), Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1993.90,+1.16%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 289.25,+1.00%), among others.



The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 2489.35,-0.52%), IndusInd Bank Ltd. (Rs. 736.00,-0.51%), Titan Company Ltd. (Rs. 3519.00,-0.43%), Nestle India Ltd. (Rs. 1207.00,-0.40%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 964.40,-0.24%), among others.



Power index was at 6788.02 up by 63.73 points or by 0.95%. Tata Power Company Ltd. (Rs. 398.05,+2.62%), JSW Energy Ltd. (Rs. 540.90,+1.68%), NHPC Ltd. (Rs. 87.77,+1.33%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 335.20,+1.19%), Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 231.95,+1.07%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 3495 , shares advanced were 2427 while 886 shares declined and 182 were unchanged.
