Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty are likely to open on a muted note on January 12, taking cues from GIFT Nifty, which was trading flat around 25,808.50.
The cautious opening comes after Indian equity benchmarks extended losses for the fifth consecutive session on January 9, 2026, weighed down by uncertainty over the US Supreme Court’s verdict on the legality of Trump-era tariffs, which kept global risk sentiment subdued. As a result, markets may remain range-bound in early trade, with investors awaiting clearer global cues.
On Friday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 83576.24 down by -604.72 points or by -0.72 % and then NSE Nifty was at 25683.3 down by -193.55 points or by -0.75 %.
On the global front, Asian markets were trading on Monday, tracking gains on Wall Street after a US jobs report showed a decline in the unemployment rate, highlighting strength in the labour market. Investors are also watching oil prices closely as protests in Iran entered a third week.
