Mid-Session: Sensex off low, down 939 pts; FM raises STT on F&O in Budget 2026

Benchmark Indian equity indices hit day's low in Sunday's special session after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman raised securities transaction tax (STT) on Futures and Options (F&O) trade in Union Budget 2026.



At 12:45 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 81336.39 down by -933.39 points or by -1.13 % and then NSE Nifty was at 25009.95 down by -310.7 points or by -1.23 %.



Sensex touched intraday high of 82726.65 and intraday low of 79899.42 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 25440.9 and intraday low of 24571.75



The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1616.20,+1.33%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 3139.45,+0.46%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 930.65,+0.14%), among others.



The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were State Bank of India (Rs. 1036.50,-3.81%), Bharat Electronics Ltd. (Rs. 433.00,-3.56%), HCL Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 1641.95,-3.10%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 312.95,-2.87%), Eternal Ltd. (Rs. 266.60,-2.59%), among others.



HCS index was at 41315.9 up by -31.82 points or by -0.08%. Vimta Labs Ltd. (Rs. 446.90,+8.64%), Sun Pharma Advanced Research Company Ltd. (Rs. 133.00,+5.30%), Syncom Formulation (India) Ltd. (Rs. 13.53,+5.13%), Neuland Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 13896.30,+4.94%), Suven Life Sciences Ltd. (Rs. 139.00,+4.67%),.



Metal index was at 37644.5 down by -1200.67 points or by -3.09%. Hindustan Zinc Ltd. (Rs. 566.65,-9.89%), National Aluminium Company Ltd. (Rs. 349.35,-9.19%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 913.00,-5.10%), Jindal Stainless Ltd. (Rs. 794.35,-3.51%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 425.70,-3.34%),.



The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 4257 , shares advanced were 1737 while 2301 shares declined and 219 were unchanged.
