Indian markets are expected to open on a weak note today, tracking negative global cues. GIFT Nifty indicates a gap-down start, trading around 23,747, down 354 points or 1.47%, amid rising geopolitical tensions.
The decline comes as oil prices surged following reports that the US Navy may block ships from Iranian ports after unsuccessful negotiations, raising concerns over supply disruptions.
In the previous session, Indian benchmark indices had closed weak. However, on April 10, markets staged a strong rebound, ending with notable gains supported by improving global sentiment and easing geopolitical worries.
On Friday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 77550.25 up by 918.6 points or by 1.2 % and then NSE Nifty was at 24050.6 up by 275.5 points or by 1.16 %.
On the global front, Asia-Pacific markets fell on Monday morning as the negotiation meeting in Islamabad did not yield an agreement between the US and Iran to end the war. This stoked worries about the conflict lasting longer than expected.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 and South Korea’s Kospi were trading 0.71 per cent and 0.75 per cent down, respectively. China’s CSI 300 was down 0.12 per cent.
Last Friday, the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.11 per cent and 0.56 per cent down, respectively. The Nasdaq Composite ended 0.35 per cent higher.

Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 16521.90 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 336.97 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 18586.11 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 1285.82 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -2064.21 Crore and Rs. -948.85
