Indian benchmark indices are expected to open sharply lower on July 24, with GIFT Nifty trading around 23,695 in early trade, indicating a gap-down start.

The benchmark indices extended their losing streak to a fourth consecutive session on July 23, as rising crude oil prices and escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continued to weigh on investor sentiment.

On Thursday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 76391.39 down by -363.66 points or by -0.47 % and then NSE Nifty was at 23869.6 down by -126.65 points or by -0.53 %.

On the global front, Asian markets declined in early trading on Thursday as Wall Street indices tumbled, weighed down by big names, while oil prices rose. Japan’s Nikkei 225 and South Korea’s Kospi were trading 2.8 per cent and 2.9 per cent lower, respectively.

Overnight, the Nasdaq Composite slumped 2.15 per cent as Alphabet and Tesla shares weighed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 settled 0.97 per cent and 1.21 per cent down, respectively.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 423.08 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 111749.62 Crore. On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 195366 with a total turnover of Rs. 31219.62 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 4494107 with a total turnover of Rs. 303024.35 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 52523479 with a total turnover of Rs. 8316382.44 Crore. and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 10386804 with a total turnover of Rs. 743398.10 Crore.

The FIIs on 23/07/2026 stood as net buyer in equity and debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 14113.71 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 4465.51 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 13787.52 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 1256.90 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. 326.19 Crore and Rs. 3208.61
