Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty 50 are likely to open on a negative note on January 17, tracking cues from GIFT Nifty trading around 23,309.5, a short while ago this morning.
In yet another rangebound session on January 16, the Indian market ended on a positive note, extending the winning run on third consecutive session amid positive cues including Gaza ceasefire deal, lower-than-expected US CPI inflation, which increases hopes of more rates cut by Fed this year and falling dollar and US bond yields further boosted investor sentiments.
On Thursday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 77042.82 up by 318.74 points or by 0.42 % and then NSE Nifty was at 23311.8 up by 98.6 points or by 0.42 %.
On the global front, Markets in the Asia-Pacific region traded mostly lower on Friday as investors in the region digested China's GDP data. The country's economy expanded by 5 per cent year on year in 2024, with an upswing in the final quarter of the year, as a flurry of stimulus measures kicked in and helped meet Beijing’s growth target.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 was down 1.3 per cent, while the Topix lost 1.37 per cent. South Korea’s Kospi declined 0.36 per cent and the Kosdaq was lower by 0.09 per cent.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index was behind by 0.22 per cent, and mainland China’s CSI was lower by 0.31 per cent. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 added 0.17 per cent.
On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 68.42 points, or 0.16 per cent, to 43,153.13, the S&P 500 fell 12.57 points, or 0.21 per cent, to 5,937.34 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 172.94 points, or 0.89 per cent, to 19,338.29.
Back home, Top traded Volumes on NSE Nifty – HDFC Life Insurance Company Ltd. 24198675.00, Tata Steel Ltd. 22164393.00, Bharat Electronics Ltd. 17234302.00, ITC Ltd. 15774070.00, NTPC Ltd. 14865186.00, On NSE, total number of shares traded was 317.97 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 95670.54 Crore.
On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 305764 with a total turnover of Rs. 21461.21 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 1526890 with a total turnover of Rs. 95090.24 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 194334186 with a total turnover of Rs. 31818112.77 Crore. and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 7524962 with a total turnover of Rs. 482714.28 Crore.
The FIIs on 16/01/2025 stood as net buyer in equity and debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 11486.22 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 99.55 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 15883.15 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 627.63 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -4396.93 Crore and Rs. -528.08
