Indian benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, are expected to open on a positive note on January 13, supported by firm cues from GIFT Nifty, which was trading higher around the 25,924 mark.

On January 12, domestic equity markets ended higher in a volatile session, snapping a five-day losing streak. The Nifty staged a strong intraday recovery and closed near 25,800, settling close to the day’s high.

On Monday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 83878.17 up by 301.93 points or by 0.36 % and then NSE Nifty was at 25790.25 up by 106.95 points or by 0.42 %.

On the global front, Asian markets were trading in the green as investors looked past geopolitical tensions in Iran and Venezuela, as well as the criminal investigation into US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. Mainland China’s CSI 300 gained 0.54 per cent, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng advanced 1.32 per cent, and South Korea’s KOSPI rose 1.04 per cent. Japan’s Nikkei surged 3.22 per cent amid reports that the ruling Liberal Democratic Party may dissolve the Lower House this month for a snap election in February. On Wall Street, the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones closed at fresh record highs overnight. The S&P 500 edged up 0.16 per cent, the Dow gained 0.17 per cent, and the Nasdaq climbed 0.26 per cent. Investors are now awaiting the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) for December, scheduled for release later today.

Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 12001.12 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 270.99 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 15688.11 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 399.21 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -3686.99 Crore and Rs. -128.22
