Indian equity benchmarks, the BSE Sensex and Nifty 50, are expected to open on a weaker note on April 23, despite supportive global cues, with GIFT Nifty indicating a mildly positive trend around the 24,226 mark.

In the previous session, the markets ended their three-day winning streak on April 22, slipping nearly 1 percent due to selling pressure in IT heavyweights and lingering concerns over geopolitical uncertainties.

On Wednesday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 78516.49 down by -756.84 points or by -0.95 % and then NSE Nifty was at 24378.1 down by -198.5 points or by -0.81 %.

On the global front, most Asian markets erased early gains as traders assessed the situation in West Asia. Japan’s Nikkei 225 and South Korea’s Kospi hit fresh highs. While the Nikkei 225 erased gains and was down 0.47 per cent, the Kospi was up 1.38 per cent.

Overnight, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite ended higher after hitting new highs. The indices ended 0.69 per cent and 1.05 per cent higher, respectively. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.69 per cent.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 515.29 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 137113.19 Crore.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 109318 with a total turnover of Rs. 17814.01 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 2140880 with a total turnover of Rs. 138395.19 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 38881310 with a total turnover of Rs. 6242321.94 Crore. and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 10669908 with a total turnover of Rs. 708903.56 Crore.

The FIIs on 22/04/2026 stood as net buyer in equity and debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 15037.01 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 558.48 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 14441.80 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 626.76 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. 595.21 Crore and Rs. -68.28
