MARKET COMMENTARY

Indian benchmark indices are expected to open on a positive note on August 20, tracking gains in GIFT Nifty, which was trading around 24,222 in early trade.

The domestic markets extended their losing streak in the previous session amid concerns over elevated crude oil prices, rising global bond yields and persistent global uncertainties.

On Wednesday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 76909.68 down by -325.78 points or by -0.42 % and then NSE Nifty was at 24078.3 down by -76.6 points or by -0.32 %.

On the global front, Asia-Pacific markets surged as bond yields declined after the US announced plans to buy back longer-dated Treasury notes to bring down borrowing costs. South Korea’s Kospi rose 6 per cent, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 was up 1.3 per cent.

Overnight, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 rose 0.22 per cent and 0.21 per cent, respectively. The Nasdaq Composite gained 0.16 per cent. Back home, Top traded Volumes on NSE Nifty – Eternal Ltd. 28100651.00, HDFC Bank Ltd. 21342651.00, Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. 17345994.00, Tata Steel Ltd. 15509632.00, ITC Ltd. 13821291.00,

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 436.77 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 110315.23 Crore.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 79325 with a total turnover of Rs. 12820.15 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 1544348 with a total turnover of Rs. 103967.95 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 45135980 with a total turnover of Rs. 7194948.66 Crore. and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 8898321 with a total turnover of Rs. 643132.08 Crore.

The FIIs on 19/08/2026 stood as net buyer in equity and debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 14823.74 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 491.44 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 11897.83 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 690.14 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. 2925.91 Crore and Rs. -198.70
